My Father’s Day
This is my first Father’s Day without a father to honor and celebrate. Those of you that know me well know that I was very close to my father. My father and I had a unique relationship unlike most father/son relationships today. As I sat in church on Sunday, Pastor Keith mentioned that we never wanted to be on the left hand of God. The left hand was the hand of judgment and punishment. He said that we wanted to be on the right hand of God. That is where Jesus sat. The right hand of God is also known for kindness, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, etc. That message spoke very close to my heart, because that is exactly the way my father was. Dad was kind, loving, compassionate, but when I stepped out of line he was quick to put me back in my place, and it was usually with a good stern butt whipping. I was spanked a lot growing up, and I deserved all of them. However, as quick as Dad was to pick me up and spank me he was also as quick to pull me back into his lap, hug me and tell me how much he loved me. I miss Dad.
As far as my own Father’s Day, it could not have been better. It was really more of a weekend than a day. We’ll start on Saturday night, though, and spare you all the boring details. As some of you know, I’ve been running each morning now for a little over a week. My routine is that I get up at 6:00 a.m., and run (ok, mostly fast walk right now) a mile or so. Saturday evening, my wife presented me with an iPod nano
complete with the Nike Plus
kit. It’s really cool. It comes with a small transmitter that sits in your shoe, and transmits your running data back to the iPod. It tracks your pace (calibrated to your weight, strides, etc), miles walked/ran, calories burned and total time.
It allows you to sync the data back to Nike so you can set personal fitness goals. You can even compete with others. To the left is some data I am sharing from a recent run. She gave it to me in time for my run Father’s Day morning. It sounds kind of corny, but I ran an extra mile for my Dad. Since his death last year, I’ve thought really hard about getting into shape. I’ve struggled with my weight most of my life now, and I really need to do something about it. Anyway, if you have one of these gadgets, and want to share your goals or compete, drop me a line. I am a fat boy, so you’ll have to be patient with me, but I’d love to have some friendly competition.
After my run on Sunday morning, I came home to a good breakfast — my wife is so sweet. After I ate my weight in waffles, we went to the early service at church. We left church and went straight to see a movie. Alex and I selected Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silver Surfer
. It was bad, but it wasn’t great either. If you really want to enjoy yourself, show up one hour late. It takes about an hour before it really gets started. Alex and I shared a small bag of popcorn, and enjoyed the family time. When we left the movie, we did some shopping, and then back home. Then I got the second round of gifts — a nice shirt and some cologne. My shirts are starting to get big, so I really needed it. She also picked up another bottle of my favorite cologne, Polo Black
. Now I won’t smell like a sweaty moose after a run. :) I am a really lucky guy. I have the best family in the world!
The night ended with a good dinner, and a nice walk. I was able to put my son to bed, and we read “If You Give a Moose a Muffin”
. If you haven’t read it, it’s a must read. Alex loves it. We said prayers, rocked and I put him to bed. It really could not have been any better. I owe it all to my wonderful wife.
I hope your Father’s Day went well. Don’t take your father for granted — make sure you tell them you love them as much as you can.
