First, lets get the marketing hoopla out of the way. Apple says this on their web site:

Apple iPhone 3G
Introducing iPhone 3G. With fast 3G wireless technology, GPS, support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and the new App Store, iPhone 3G puts even more amazing features in your hands. And just like the original iPhone, it combines three products in one — a revolutionary phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device.
I have had the original iPhone since the day of the release, and have been very happy with it. I was pretty skeptical about upgrading because I heard so many iPhone users saying that the new 3G didn’t pose enough features over the current model to motivate them to upgrade. I went into our local Apple Store, and demoed one of the floor models. It didn’t immediately excite me. However after reading more and more reviews on the speed of the 3G network, I decided to take the plunge and get one. I found out real quick that there were plenty of upgrades done to the phone. The new features I noticed right away were:
- 3G speeds: This might not seem like a big deal at first, but you really do notice a big difference from the EDGE network. If you tether
your iPhone to your MacBook Pro, you notice a HUGE difference. - True GPS: When you go to the Google Maps and look at your current location, it will pin point your exact location.. it’s creepy. If your in the car, you will even see you move along the road. This is nice when your trying to find your way to location for which you’ve added a Pin.
- Brighter Screen: Not a huge difference, but enough to notice.
- Loud speakers: Speaker phone on the new 3G model actually works. It’s loud enough that even I (yes, I) can hear it while driving down the road. This was a big plus for me.
- No more recessed headphone jack. The new headphone hack is flush with the device, so you can now use ANY headphones with the new iPhone as long as it sports the 1/4″ plug.
The only draw back to the new iPhone 3G is the cost. AT&T is changing an additional $10 more than the original version, so its clear their 3G network is being sold as a premium product. In addition, the data plan does not include text messages. If your a big text messager, you will want to buy a text package. See how that begins to add up?
In all, I have been very pleased with the new phone. If you haven’t sprung for the new model yet, perhaps Santa will bring you one for Christmas? If you can’t wait until Christmas, and you buy one soon let me give you a piece of advice. Sell your original on Craigslist, and sell it high! People are buying the original iPhones, unlocking them and using them on different networks, and their willing to pay top dollar for them. I sold my original for $300 and I had people lining up for it.
