All is quiet.. for now

It’s almost 10:00 p.m., and the only sound in the house is Audrey putting on the crib sheets. Alex is asleep after a long play in the bathtub, and Andrew is laying in our bed after a long night of crying. Andrew, like his brother, is getting teeth early.. a lot of teeth. Poor guy. I do love the sound of a quiet house. Audrey just passed by me.. she is going to shower. She’s been to the gym. She needs a shower.

I love my family, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. But I have to tell you, the chaos is sometimes overwhelming. It’s like Andrew and Alex duck in the corner, and coordinate their attacks. It’s tough. Andrew is just cranky lately because of his teeth, but Alex is back to testing the water.. on an hourly basis. I feel like all I do is get on to him. On Saturday, Alex and I took Mom’s car to the dealership to have her oil changed and the tires rotated. I snapped the photo here while we waited. He is showing off his new Batman action figure. He’s such a cute kid. He is looking more and more like Audrey side of the family as he gets older. That’s a good thing.

On to nicer thoughts. I woke early this morning, and stopped by the Apple Store on my way to work. I expected to have to wait until Christmas to get one. The lines have always been hours long since the launch last month. I arrived when the mall opened this morning, and I was the first in line. There are a few things I will point out for those who are asking, “Should I upgrade?”.

1. The call quality is much better. They are crystal clear.
2. The GPS is much more accurate. Instead of showing you a 10 mile radius, it will show you exactly where you are. I suppose this could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your level of paranoia.
3. The speaker phone is actually usable. Even a deaf guy like me can hear it.
4. The volume overall is much better — the rings, the events, etc.
5. The 3G network is quite a bit faster. In a real world test, a co-worker and I visited the same web site at the same time, and mine loaded in 18 seconds as opposed to his 40 seconds. The web site was one neither him nor I visited on our iPhone before — www.palm.com.

I upgraded just to upgrade. It wasn’t something I was just excited to do. The features I saw, 3G and GPS weren’t huge draws for me. However, the few additional things I mentioned above things I saw only after I upgraded, and are actually worth the upgrade. Know anyone who wants to buy a used first generation iPhone? :)

For those of you who want more photos of Andrew, I am sorry. I promise I will be taking some more soon. Usually when he is awake, he’s so busy its hard to get a camera in front of him. I will try better to get more photos soon.

It’s after 10 now, so I will be heading to bed. I have to get up in the morning and head to the gym. Ugg..

Run, Forrest, Run!

100 Miles from Nike + - Nike.com
As many of you know, I started jogging just before Father’s Day this year. After my jog this morning, I synced my iPod, and I got a nice surprise — since June 10th, I’ve ran 100 miles. That may not sound like a big deal for some people, but for me that’s pretty incredible. Nike even gave me a cheesy printable certificate image. That makes it all worth it! :)

It hasn’t been easy. With Audrey being pregnant, it’s been tempting to fall off the wagon. A couple days ago while grocery shopping, it took every ounce of energy to not buy the gallon carton of Blue Bell Key Lime Pie Ice Cream. It’s a summer flavor (only available in the summer time), but I knew that if I bought it I would eat the entire thing because Audrey doesn’t like Key Lime anything. Sigh. I love that ice cream. Anyway, I have increased my resistant to 5 times a week, and increased weights from 10 to 20 pounds, but I am still keeping my reps at 12. Anyone an expert here, please let me know if you have any pointers.

That’s all for now. I also thought I would leave you with my iTunes stats of my runs. Pretty impressive the amount of calories you can burn in 100 miles. Thank you all for your support.

11 Updates Needed for a Better iPhone

Me and the iPhoneAfter a week with the iPhone, I have been able to make a quick list of things I think need to be addressed to improve the iPhone. Since the iPhone syncs with iTunes, these issues could be easily addressed with a Software Update. Some of these issues may be the result of cross OS compatibility to create a unified user experience on the PC and Mac, but since I (and all Apple lovers) use OS X I don’t really care about how it would perform with the PC. This is an Apple product, right?

I have already posted these concerns to an Apple forum monitored heavily by Apple employees, so I hope it’s taken seriously.

  • Ability to sort locations in the Weather application
  • Calendar application should retain the same groups and colors as the desktop Calendar application
  • Ability to add contacts to groups like the Address Book on the desktop
  • Ability to sort stock tickers
  • Ability to sort Notes
  • Ability to sync notes in the same way you can with the iPod. Currently there is no way to get a Note onto your desktop that I’ve found
  • Enable disk use on desktop, so I can use my iPhone to transfer documents to different computers
  • Ability to add a time/date stamp to photos taken with the camera
  • Ability to zoom with camera (similar to the way the Palm Treo 650 does it)
  • Create folders in POP mail and move messages to folders on the iPhone
  • Legend for traffic noting what colors indicate

In all, the iPhone is everything is was hyped to be. It’s essentially a small handheld computer that looks really good and performs most day-to-day tasks, ie, check e-mail, browse the web, etc. I have been super happy, but I am just as excited to see a software update to address some of these pesky issues.

My Father’s Day

My Father’s Day

Karl Pruitt and David Pruitt in 1979This is my first Father’s Day without a father to honor and celebrate. Those of you that know me well know that I was very close to my father. My father and I had a unique relationship unlike most father/son relationships today. As I sat in church on Sunday, Pastor Keith mentioned that we never wanted to be on the left hand of God. The left hand was the hand of judgment and punishment. He said that we wanted to be on the right hand of God. That is where Jesus sat. The right hand of God is also known for kindness, mercy, compassion, forgiveness, etc. That message spoke very close to my heart, because that is exactly the way my father was. Dad was kind, loving, compassionate, but when I stepped out of line he was quick to put me back in my place, and it was usually with a good stern butt whipping. I was spanked a lot growing up, and I deserved all of them. However, as quick as Dad was to pick me up and spank me he was also as quick to pull me back into his lap, hug me and tell me how much he loved me. I miss Dad.

As far as my own Father’s Day, it could not have been better. It was really more of a weekend than a day. We’ll start on Saturday night, though, and spare you all the boring details. As some of you know, I’ve been running each morning now for a little over a week. My routine is that I get up at 6:00 a.m., and run (ok, mostly fast walk right now) a mile or so. Saturday evening, my wife presented me with an iPod nano image complete with the Nike Plus image kit. It’s really cool. It comes with a small transmitter that sits in your shoe, and transmits your running data back to the iPod. It tracks your pace (calibrated to your weight, strides, etc), miles walked/ran, calories burned and total time.

It allows you to sync the data back to Nike so you can set personal fitness goals. You can even compete with others. To the left is some data I am sharing from a recent run. She gave it to me in time for my run Father’s Day morning. It sounds kind of corny, but I ran an extra mile for my Dad. Since his death last year, I’ve thought really hard about getting into shape. I’ve struggled with my weight most of my life now, and I really need to do something about it. Anyway, if you have one of these gadgets, and want to share your goals or compete, drop me a line. I am a fat boy, so you’ll have to be patient with me, but I’d love to have some friendly competition.

After my run on Sunday morning, I came home to a good breakfast — my wife is so sweet. After I ate my weight in waffles, we went to the early service at church. We left church and went straight to see a movie. Alex and I selected Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silver Surfer image. It was bad, but it wasn’t great either. If you really want to enjoy yourself, show up one hour late. It takes about an hour before it really gets started. Alex and I shared a small bag of popcorn, and enjoyed the family time. When we left the movie, we did some shopping, and then back home. Then I got the second round of gifts — a nice shirt and some cologne. My shirts are starting to get big, so I really needed it. She also picked up another bottle of my favorite cologne, Polo Black image. Now I won’t smell like a sweaty moose after a run. :) I am a really lucky guy. I have the best family in the world!

The night ended with a good dinner, and a nice walk. I was able to put my son to bed, and we read “If You Give a Moose a Muffin” image. If you haven’t read it, it’s a must read. Alex loves it. We said prayers, rocked and I put him to bed. It really could not have been any better. I owe it all to my wonderful wife.

I hope your Father’s Day went well. Don’t take your father for granted — make sure you tell them you love them as much as you can.
